MONROE - Cheesemaker tennis coach Brad Saugstad moved each of his singles players up one spot and Monroe lost a Badger Conference crossover to Sauk Prairie 4-3 Monday, April 22.
The Cheesemakers lost three three-set matches.
"This wasn't the result we hoped for tonight, but you can learn more from a tough loss than from an easy win," Saugstad said. "We'll learn from this match and move forward. As I've told the boys, our goal is to peak at the end of the season."
Monroe sophomore Matt Monahan at No. 2 singles defeated Sauk Prairie's Logan Chrisler 7-6 (7), 6-2. At No. 3 singles, sophomore Jeremy Miller defeated Angus Mossman 6-3, 6-0.
"Matt had to battle in the first set and didn't have all of his shots working, but he fought through and took advantage of his opponent's weaknesses," Saugstad said.
Saugstad said once Miller got into a rhythm, he took over the match.
Monroe junior Ellyott Baertschi at No. 4 singles lost a three-set match to Sauk Prairie's Jarrett Frosch 4-6, 6-4, 6-1. Sophomore Kevin Noriega at No. 1 singles also lost a heartbreaking three-set match to Sterling Walsh 6-2, 0-6, 6-4.
"Kevin Noriega played one of the better matches I've seen him play," Saugstad said. "Kevin changed paced, played with nice consistency, and was working a nice game plan. He lost, but he's definitely starting to figure out his shots and his style of play."
The Eagles won two of the three doubles matches. The lone win for the Cheesemakers came at No. 3 doubles, where seniors Vince Wartenweiler and Austin Lewey knocked off Sauk Prairie's Nathan Lovell and Max Coby 6-1-6-2.
"Vince was putting balls away at the net and Austin played with a lot of consistency," he said. "It was a good win for them."
At No. 1 doubles, the Cheesemakers' senior tandem of Taylor Soddy and Kevin Kohlstedt lost to Tyler Ballweg and Cody Mack 6-4, 4-6, 6-1. Monroe senior Jared Nix and junior Mark Jenson at No. 2 doubles lost to Bryan Wilcox and Ben Kraus 6-4, 6-4.
