NEW GLARUS — The Sugar River Raiders bounced back from their loss to McFarland on May 8 with a resounding 7-0 win over Cambridge-Deerfield-Waterloo United on Tuesday May 12 in Capitol Conference soccer.
The Raiders’ first goal came at 3:42 in the first half as junior Kate Parman drilled it into the net on an assist by senior Toria Devoe. Parman scored again unassisted at 10:31 for a 2-0 Sugar River lead. Junior Ellie Brenkman got an unassisted goal at 27:31 to put Sugar River up 3-0. At 38:04, freshman Maya Crennel got a goal on an assist by Devoe to put the Raiders at a 4-0 halftime advantage.
Just minutes into the second half, Parman got her third goal with an assist from senior Bailey McGuire to make it 5-0 at 48:46. The Raiders weren’t done as Devoe sprinted about 40 yards after receiving a pass from Brenkman and put it into the net at 68:54 to give the Raiders a 6-0 lead. Junior Holly Maynard finished the scoring for the Raiders with an unassisted goal at 71:45 as the Raiders won 7-0.
Much of the match was played on the Sugar River end of the pitch, so the goalkeeping stats are very minimal. Senior Savana Minter had no saves in 40 minutes in goal and freshman Greer Coppernoll had one save in 40 minding the net.
“We were playing to a level we needed and give some people opportunities in the second half and they (United) were playing short today so we were trying to play respectful soccer and I thought it was a good night,” remarked Sugar River coach John Ziperski.
Sugar River remains 1 1/2 games behind Lake Mills for first place in the Capitol Conference at 4-1 and 6-3-1 overall. The Raiders traveled to Columbus for a Capitol Conference match on Friday May 15.
