MONROE - New Glarus freshman Madelyn Hammer couldn't wait for the swim season to start so she could get a chance to swim on the inaugural co-op with Monroe.
"I was really looking forward to this all year," Hammer said. "Linda (Moser) is a great coach. She's really a lot of fun. My goals are to try my best, really work hard and make it to state."
Hammer and the Monroe-New Glarus girls swimming team had a chance to see where they stack up Tuesday against Milton, one of the elite teams in the state and in Division 2. Milton, which finished ninth at state last year, won all 11 events in the dual meet and swept the top three spots in the 100-meter backstroke and 400 freestyle.
"I was sick, but I tried my best to keep pace," Hammer said. "I didn't want to let my team down when I was swimming."
Hammer finished in second place in the 200-meter individual medley with a time of 2 minutes, 39.04 seconds, and she took second in the 100 breaststroke (1:22.47).
Monroe junior Abby Oudinot took second in the 50 freestyle (30.32) and second in the 100 freestyle (1:08.21).
"They (Milton) really are good competition," Oudinot said. "They push us, which is really good for us for the end of the season. It's good practice for later in the season."
Oudinot, who swam for the first time last year, made strides in the 50 freestyle last year. She has her sights set on becoming one of the top sprinters in the conference.
"My goal was to start where I ended up at the end last year," she said. "I did that. I have to keep working to get my time down even more and I will see what happens."
Monroe-New Glarus coach Linda Moser is using different combinations in the relays during the regular season to see how the team will line up for conference and the sectional later this season.
"We are using different combinations so when we get to the sectional I'm really for sure I will have the best four swimmers," Moser said. "One of their team goals is to practice like we are going to state. That is the only way to do it. You have to keep your eye on that ultimate goal and take steps every week to get that. Are we going to win conference? No. We can still do amazing things at sectional and conference."
The Cheesemakers' 200 medley relay team of sophomore Skylar Lassen, Hammer, Oudinot and junior Grace Moehn finished second (2:16.81), which was just behind the Red Hawks (2:16.19). New Glarus junior Reagan Andersen teamed with senior MacKenzie Hesgard, Moehn and junior Anna Meritt to finish second in the 200 freestyle relay second (2:09.24).
New Glarus junior Anna Wolf took second place in the 100 butterfly (1:16.68). Wolf teamed with Lassen, Oudinot and Hammer to take second place in the 400 freestyle relay (4:30.02).
"Our goal was to score at least 50 points," Moser said. "That is what I wanted and they pulled it out."
