SPRING GREEN - New Glarus/Monticello senior Ryan McCoy is eager to defend his WIAA Division 2 individual state cross country title.
So he welcomed the opportunity to race a fellow state champion for the second week in a row.
McCoy covered the 5,000-meter course at the Spring Green Municipal Golf Course Saturday morning in a winning time of 15 minutes, 38 seconds in the boys' small schools race, pulling away from defending Division 3 state champion Tyson Miehe of Darlington over the final 2,000 meters.
That followed a victory last Saturday over defending Division 1 state champion Chandler Diffee of Madison La Follette at the Verona Invitational.
"Obviously it's a great workout because you're pushing yourself almost to the max two meets in a row," McCoy said. "But it's not about doing really well now. It's about doing really well in October."
Miehe (16:04) repeated his runner-up finish of a year ago, while teammate Quinn Cullen was third in 16:37.
"When we got about halfway through the race, he made a move and I didn't have a response," Miehe said of McCoy. "He just had a little more than me today."
Miehe and McCoy will have a rematch Tuesday at the Dana Waddell Invitational in Marshall.
But Miehe was pleased Darlington - the defending Division 3 state champion - was able to win the small schools team title with 35 points, ahead of runner-up Boscobel (81).
"It's nice to get in big races like this because when we go to the state meet, you can get overwhelmed by it," Miehe said. "A meet like this helps us just do our thing and run better."
Diffee repeated as champion in the boys' large schools race (15:57). Dylan Eigenberger of Dubuque (Iowa) Senior was second (15:59) and Wunnicke was third (16:01).
Christa Wamsley finished third overall in 15:35 over the 4,000-meter girls course to help Darlington (64 points) hold off Viroqua (67) for the small schools team title. Westby's Allyson Daines won the individual title in 15:20. Madison Country Day freshman Aidan Campbell was second (15:26).
"This meet always shows us how well we actually are just because of the competition," Wamsley said after the Redbirds, who finished third at state last year, placed all five of their scoring runners in the top 25.
Two-time defending Division 2 state champion Dodgeville/Mineral Point (51 points) outdistanced runner-up Middleton (76) for the girls large schools team title.
Sauk Prairie junior Lianna Mack used a strong finish to win the girls' large schools individual title in 14:53, passing the Dodgeville/Mineral Point duo of Anna Eisenzimmer (14:55) and Hannah Owens (14:57) over the final 25 meters.
