MONROE — The WIAA announced the boys basketball regional matchups Feb. 7, with the postseason kicking off Feb. 16.
In Division 2, Monroe (12-1), ranked No. 4 in the state in the Associated Press poll and No. 5 in the WisSports.net Coaches poll, was seeded No. 2 behind unranked Edgerton (18-4). Unfortunately for Monroe, five of the seven teams in the regional hail from the Rock Valley, and politics of the seeding process kept the Cheesemakers from the top seed.
Going into the seeding meeting, the winning percentage of Monroe’s opponents were nearly 60% after the Cheesemakers scored an emphatic 65-52 win over Division 1 Beaver Dam (15-5). Of Monroe’s 13 games, 11 have come against Division 1 opponents, and the two Division 3 teams — Darlington and New Glarus — are a combined 28-11. Edgerton, meanwhile, has only played 1/4 of its schedule against Division 1 schools.
With a first-round bye, the Cheesemakers will host the winner of 3-seed Evansville (14-2) and Delavan-Darien (4-8) on Feb. 19. Edgerton will face either Big Foot (7-16) or Turner (6-13). The regional championship will be played at the highest remaining seed’s school.
Division 3
Darlington (14-4) scored the top seed in its regional and will play the winner of Belleville (7-10) and Dodgeville (9-9). On the other side of the regional, New Glarus (14-7) is the No. 2 seed and has a first-round bye and will await the winner of Lancaster (12-3) and Prairie du Chien (3-8).
Brodhead (12-7) is the No. 4 seed in a regional further east. The Cardinals will host Cambridge (7-8) in the first round, with the winner traveling to face top seed and third-ranked St. John’s NW Academies (16-5) in the regional semifinal. On the other side of the bracket, Clinton (0-14) and Marshall (14-6) will face off to see who will advance to see eighth-ranked Lakeside Lutheran (15-4) in the regional semifinal.
Division 5
Second-ranked Monticello (13-2) gets a first-round bye and will face the winner of Williams Bay Faith Christian (2-8) and Burlington Catholic Central (2-17). On the other side of the bracket, Albany (5-12) is the 3-seed and will host Juda (1-8). The winner will take on Barneveld (3-6) in the regional semifinal.
Further west, Shullsburg (8-6) is the No. 1 seed and gets a first-round bye. The Miners will host the winner of 5-seed Argyle (2-10) and 4-seed Belmont (2-14), which face off in the first round. Also playing in the first round of the regional is 6-seed Pecatonica (2-10), which travels to 3-seed Black Hawk (5-8). Benton (6-6) is the 2-seed and will host the winner of the Warriors-Vikings game.
