Raiders rebound from loss, Evansville puts Monroe away

SPRING GREEN — The Sugar River Raiders bounced back from a conference loss to Lake Mills with a nonconference win over the River Valley Blackhawks 4-0 on Thursday, April 30.

The Blackhawks had not allowed a goal this season until the Raiders broke the streak in River Valley’s seventh match of the season.

Junior Holly Maynard scored the first goal on a penalty kick at 24:37 to put the Raiders in front 1-0. Junior Ellie Brenkman made it 2-0 with a goal at 31:68, assisted by senior Ella Woodmansee.

Sugar River scored twice more in the second half, one by junior Kate Parman, assisted by senior Cora Funseth at 44:41. Senior goalkeeper Savanah Minter had five saves.

Sugar River (7-2-1, 2-1 Capitol) was set to travel to Lakeside Lutheran for a Capitol Conference game on Tuesday, May 5.

Evansville 5, Monroe 2

MONROE — The Monroe Cheesemakers found themselves down 2-0 at halftime and ended up with a 5-2 loss to the Evansville Blue Devils in Rock Valley Conference girls soccer on Thursday, April 30.

The Cheesemakers came to life in the second half with a pair of goals. Senior Mara Dickson got Monroe on the board with a goal in the 60th minute, assisted by senior Mary McKenzie. McKenzie scored the second goal herself in the 71st with freshman Angeles Tavares providing the assist. However, the Blue Devils scored three goals in the second half.

Senior goalkeeper Kennedy Voegeli had eight saves for Monroe.

“We’re playing hard and we’re getting better every day,” said Cheesemakers coach Samantha Rudi.

Monroe (1-4, 1-3) was scheduled to take on Platteville/Lancaster at home on Tuesday, May 5 in a nonconference makeup game that was postponed on April 4.
