Monroe’s Kenny steps down

MONROE — Patrick Kenny has resigned as the girls basketball coach at Monroe High School. Kenny coached junior varsity girls basketball for six years, then became the varsity basketball coach in 2020, succeeding Sam Mathiason. Kenny coached the Cheesemakers for six years and just concluded a season where the Cheesemakers went 8-17.

In a release to the Monroe Athletic Department, Kenny said, “after 12 years of coaching in Monroe, I have made the difficult decision to step down as head coach of the girls basketball program. While this was not an easy choice, it is the right time for me to step away and dedicate more time to my family. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to lead this program and to work alongside so many outstanding student-athletes, coaches, and supporters throughout the Monroe community. I take great pride in the growth and progress the program has made — especially in recent years — and firmly believe it is moving in a positive direction.”

When asked about any special memories he had in his time coaching the Cheesemakers, Kenny said, “I’ve always been particularly proud of the Monroe Cares game where we raised support for our wonderful community members while simultaneously teaching our student-athletes the importance of teamwork.”

In the meantime, Kenny said he will continue to teach social studies at Monroe High School.

“I would like to extend my sincere appreciation to the assistant coaches, youth program leaders, administration, athletic directors, school staff, and community members who have supported our efforts. Their commitment has played a vital role in strengthening the culture of girls basketball in Monroe,” Kenny said.

The next head coach of the Cheesemakers will be only the fourth head coach of the program since 1989.
