EDGERTON — The Monroe boys won the Tider Invitational May 6, while the girls finished fifth out of 11 teams.
“We were really excited with the competition at this meet. Jefferson and Lodi tied for the Division 2 state title last year, and La Crosse Aquinas is the defending Division 3 champion,” said Scott Mosher, Monroe’s coach. “In many of the events there will be multiple athletes who will make the podium at State in a few weeks as well, so we felt it would be a good indicator of how our athletes and team stacks up against the best in the state.”
Mosher said assistant coach Patrick Cleary noticed in the program that the boys had never won the team title at the Tider Invitational, and the coaches informed their athletes in hopes of adding a little more motivation.
“The boys ended up winning by 8.5 points. We had only a 3.5-point lead going into the last event, the 4x400, but the runners didn’t know what the score was because some field events still had to be scored,” Mosher said. “They knew they needed to take care of business to win, and did just that, winning the race and securing the team championship.”
The Monroe quartet of Jakar Broitzman, Jason Carpenter, Jordan Klocke and Lucas Sathoff finished at 3:32.28 — more than a full second ahead of second place Dodgeville.
“As a coach it was awesome to see the determination on the four athlete’s faces. Jordan Klocke was our leadoff and rallied the team together prior to the event,” Mosher said. “The race really came down to our third leg, Jakar Broitzman, who cruised to a lifetime best — on his birthday — and gave Lucas Sathoff a lead he wouldn’t give up.”
Overall on the day, Mosher said it wasn’t that his won the meet that impressed him — but the way they won.
“We did not have an individual event winner, which usually needs to happen to do well at a big invite. Instead, we finished in the Top 4 in 9 of the 14 individual events, and placed in the Top 4 of each relay, winning two of those relays,” Mosher said.
Ben Gatdula, Brayden Mazahreh, Klocke and Sathoff won the 400-meter relay with a time of 44.81.
Monroe had four second place finishes:
● JT Seagreaves, 200-meter dash (23.19)
● Jakar Broitzman, 400-meter dash (52.89)
● Jason Carpenter, 300-meter hurdles (41.74)
● Gatdula, Mazahreh, Klocke, Egor Sereda, 800-meter relay (1:37.44)
The Cheesemakers finished third in four events, though Isaac Bunker came up a half of an inch short of second place in the shot put at 45-feet, 4-inches.
Other third place finishers for Monroe include:
● Charlie Wiegel, high jump (6-0)
● Isaac Bunker, discus (135-03)
● Jared Batz, Anthony Wels, Wyatt Stevenson, Caden Oudinot, 3,200-meter relay (9:15.18)
“I’m hoping this meet can be a confidence builder and a jumping off point for some great performances in the final weeks of the season,” Mosher said. “We have some athletes that are really coming on strong right now. Our throwers, Caleb Bunker, Austin Fuchs, and Sean Rufenacht all set personal bests in the shot put and discus, and scored us quite a few points. They are a group the coaching staff is pretty excited to see what they can do at conference and the rest of the postseason.”
On the girls side, Mount Horeb won the team title with Lodi second and the Cheesemakers fifth. While Monroe didn’t win any event, the Cheesemakers had two second- and third-place finishes, and scored points by finishing fourth in two other events.
Monroe second place:
● Brenna Aebly, 100-meter hurdles (17.25)
● Taylor Jacobson, Brenna Aebly, Aleigh Zettle, Lauren Coppes, 800-meter relay (1:51.57)
Monroe third place:
● Jadyn Elgin, 3,200-meter run (12:30.23)
● Sophie McGuire, pole vault (9-0)
