Monroe edges Watertown in Badger Challenge

MOUNT HOREB — Down by 11 with six minutes to go, the Cheesemakers flipped a switch to come out on top of Watertown 53-50 in the Badger Challenge on Saturday, Jan. 21.

The Badger Challenge pits like teams in the Badger Conference against each other for a cross-over matchup. Monroe, 2-5 in the West, drew Watertown, 0-7 in the East.

Keatin Sweeney, who finished with eight points, had a critical 3-pointer and offensive put-back down the stretch. Tucker Markham contributed to the run, going 3-for-4 at the free-throw line. He finished 8-for-11 at the charity stripe with 16 total points. James Seagreaves led the team with 17 points, including a baseline drive turned dunk in the late-game stretch. Seagreaves in second in scoring for the Badger West with 18.8 ppg. Kyan Reichhoff of Portage leads with 22.3 ppg.


BLACK HAWK 66, JUDA 44

SOUTH WAYNE — The Warriors stepped up in their first game without leading scorer Lucas Milz, as four players scored in double figures during Black Hawk’s conference win over Juda on Friday, Jan. 20.

Gabe Tree led the way with 16 points, including two 3-pointers. Eli Schliem also drained two threes in his 12-point total. Seth Dunlavey was the second highest scorer with 13 points, followed by Andrew Figi with 11 points. Despite the win, the free-throw struggles continue for the Warriors. The team shot 4-for-16 at the charity stripe for 25%.

For Juda, Erik Woodward and Jayden Brown tallied 11 points each. Brown accounted for three of the Panthers’ four 3-pointers. The remaining bucket came from Blake Adkins (three points). Braydon Steinmann was the third player in double figures with 10 points.


NEW GLARUS 78, WISCONSIN HEIGHTS 59

MAZOMANIE — A balanced offense led New Glarus (10-5, 3-1 Capitol South) to a conference victory on Friday, Jan. 20. Combined with Marshall’s loss to Belleville, the Cardinals (8-5, 3-1) and the Knights move into a tie for second place in conference. The Wildcats (10-4) have a one-game lead at 4-0. 

AC Strok led the squad with 18 points, going 6-for-7 at the charity stripe. Breckyn Thompson trailed close behind with 17 points, 15 of which came from beyond the arc. The other two points were a pair of free throws. Max Parman tallied 14 points, converting at every spot on the floor. He made two shots inside the arc, two from beyond and four at the free-throw line. Ethan Friedrich was the fourth player in double figures with 13 points. 


MCFARLAND 77, BRODHEAD 47

MCFARLAND — Jaxon Dooley led the Cardinal offense in a loss to the conference-leading Spartans on Friday, Jan. 20.

Dooley scored over half of the team’s points — 25 — with the next highest scorer being Brody Riese with seven points. Riese accounted for Brodhead’s only three of the game. Cullen Walker tallied six points, including a pair of free throws. Walker was the only player above 50% at the charity stripe, as the team was 4-for-12 for 33%.


BARNEVELD 73, MONTICELLO 35

BARNEVELD — Ryan Gust’s hot hand propelled the Eagles over the Ponies in a conference game on Friday, Jan. 20.

Gust drained three 3-pointers followed by a basket and free throw to give Barneveld a 12-2 lead. Nick and Alex Roe got the game back within three, sinking back-to-back threes. The Eagles opened the second half with a decisive 28-2 run, though.

Alex Roe led the Ponies with 11 points, all occurring in the first half. Peyton Smith tallied seven points, followed by Jackson Eyler with six points. The trio also led on the boards with nine rebounds from Smith, eight from Eyler and three from Alex Roe. Gust recorded a double-double for Barneveld with 23 points and 13 rebounds.
