Monroe boys champs again

MONROE — The Cheesemakers won yet another Badger Conference boys track and field title on May 17, scoring in all but one event and finishing with 146 points — 28 ahead of second place Oregon.

“What I think is most impressive is that our seniors are undefeated for conference championships in their career,” said Monroe’s boys coach Scott Mosher. “We’ve won every year since 2019, missing the 2020 season because of Covid (but honestly that could have been our best team). Kids like Lucas Sathoff, JT Seagreaves, Jake Blaser, Lucas Flom have all played rolls every year in the success.”

The only race Monroe didn’t score in was the 800-meter relay, which was disqualified on the last exchange.

“We were in position to place in the Top 3. But that’s the only event that we didn’t score points in, which is really rare and shows the all-around depth of this team,” Mosher said.

Individual champions for Monroe include Jason Carpenter in the 110-meter hurdles (15.73), Isaac Bunker in the shot put (46-feet, 0.75 inches), and Austin Fuchs in the discus (135-02). Jakar Broitzman, Jordan Klocke, Lucas Sathoff and Carpenter teamed up for a first-place finish in the 1,600-meter relay (3:33.99). Jake Blakser, Ben Gatdula, Egor Sereda and Brayden Mazahreh took first in the 400-meter relay (44.35).

Carpenter was second in the 300-hurdles (21.09). Third place efforts went to Charlie Wiegel in the 200 (23.20), Broitzman in the 400 (52.52), James Seagreaves in the high jump (6-0), Brady Schuh in the pole vault (11-06), Carpenter in the triple jump (41-02) and Bunker in the discus (130-07).

On the girls side, Monroe was fifth with 88 points. Edgewood won the title with 138.

“We knew there were a few elite teams that had more firepower than us, so we were striving for a top half finish,” said Monroe girls coach Eric Jubeck. “Reedsburg kind of crept up on us and took fourth, but fifth place ended up being where we belonged, as the girls competed very well and had some excellent results. We had five all-conference athletes (top-3 each event) and one relay.”

Lauren Coppes was conference champion in the triple jump (34-04.5). Aleigh Zettle and Sierra McGuire tied in the pole vault (8-09) for first place, but Zettle was named the champion in a “vault-off”. Zettle was second in the 200-meter dash (27.07) for the second straight year.

“It was a stacked finals (in the 200) and to come out second was very impressive,” Jubeck said, adding that Zettle’s “hard work paid off in the pole vault.”

“So very cool for Sierra as a senior to tie as conference champion with Aleigh, as she’s been a great mentor and leader for the vault girls. Lauren popped a 34’4.5” jump on her 6th jump of her 4th individual event of the day.  A great accomplishment for Lauren and a major highlight of the meet,” Jubeck said.

Monroe’s 1,600-meter relay team of McGuire, Zettle, Bre Lambert and Elery Bazley took second (4:18.26).

“A very fast time, and we are very excited and optimistic about this group coming together for regionals and hopefully making a run to try to get to state,” Jubeck said.

Jadyn Elgin was third in the 3,200-meter run (12:13.29), while Lambert was third in the 400 (1:02.59).

“After a frustrating season with injuries for Bre, we are so very happy for her to have a great race at conference and healthy for regionals on Monday,” Jubeck said. “Jadyn ran a perfect race, staying with Oregon’s star runner (Dasha Vorontsov) for as long as she could and then gutting out a great race. She is deserving of being an all-conference athlete.”
