SOUTH WAYNE — If Black Hawk learned anything last season on the softball diamond, it is that there is plenty to be optimistic about in 2022.

The Warriors graduated just one starter a season ago, and not only return a slew of talent, but bring in some strong underclassmen that will battle for playing time as well.

“With only losing one teammate from last year, this year we should be stronger than ever,” said second-year head coach Talia Rothenbuhler. “We have a lot of returning athletes with great experience, and our incoming freshman should be strong for us as well.”

Seniors returning are Tatum Baumgartner (3B) and Anna Haldiman (P), plus junior Ellie Edler (P) and sophomores Kaylee Hagen (OF/P), Kendra Haldiman (OF), Keira Haldiman (OF) and Makayla Kammes (OF). Newcomers to the squad include sophomore Jenaka Stietz and freshmen Molly Edler and Hailey Wellnitz.

Rothenbuhler said early season challenges may come with a few position changes, but the changes are for the betterment of the team as a whole. After the initial adjustment phase, she’s hoping her player can get going on all cylinders.

“With making some position changes, I’m sure it will take some time to adjust, however I have confidence in my senior leaders to be just that, leaders,” Rothenbuhler said. “That means to step up and make plays when they need to, as well help their younger teammates excel at the game as well.”
