MONROE — Facing the toughest opponents of the conference, Monroe dropped its first league match of the season 6-1 to East Troy on Sept. 24.
“I knew East Troy would be tough, as they have a very strong program that works hard in the offseason,” Monroe head coach Matt Bordner said. “It’s good for our girls to see the next level of conference play and what it will take to get to the top.”
No. 2 doubles squad Brinley Roidt and Alexis Gertsch were the lone win with a tight 6-5, 7-5 victory.
“Brinley was easily the most aggressive player at the court and dominated at the net,” Bordner said. “Alexis really complimented her well with some solid baseline play and important volleys down the stretch as well.”
The other doubles matches were close, but the East Troy singles lineup made quick work of Monroe. The Cheesemakers won just seven combined games.
“Ultimately, their singles lineup is just so tough, consistent, and makes you pay for any mediocre ball you hit,” Bordner said.
Monroe concludes regular-season play with a match against Jefferson, who previously defeated East Troy 4-3. The Rock Valley Conference tournament will take place at Whitewater on Tuesday, Oct. 1.
“I think we are closer than we have ever been on the girls team to competing for a conference championship,” Bordner said.
