MONROE — The Cheesemakers had one of the best opening stretches of a game this season, hanging to within three points of Brodhead (7-5) in a Rock Valley crossover Jan. 17. With 11:20 left in the opening half, the Cheesemakers trailed 13-10.
Unfortunately for Monroe (3-12), with about eight minutes left in the first half, the Cardinals began to expand their lead — rapidly. A 28-9 Brodhead run made it 41-19 at halftime. By the end of the night, Brodhead had registered a 70-29 road victory.
Darlington 53, Riverdale 45
MUSCODA — The Redbirds had to grind out a tough SWAL victory on Jan. 16.
Riverdale had high shooting percentages across the board compared to Darlington. The Redbirds won the turnover battle, but more importantly, Darlington out-scored Riverdale in points off turnovers 15-6. Darlington’s domination of the glass played an even more pivotal role. The Redbirds grabbed 18 of their own missed shots, scoring 13 second-chance points.
Catie Hartwig scored 23 points for Darlington, leading all scorers. She also had nine rebounds. Sadie Goebel added 11 points and 11 boards for the Redbirds.
Black Hawk 69, Benton 26
BENTON — The Warriors jumped out to a 20-point lead at halftime and never relinquished momentum in a Six Rivers crossover victory Jan. 17. Black Hawk forced 30 turnovers — including 23 steals — and scored 58 points in the paint. The two teams combined to make just 2 of 29 (6.8%) shots from beyond the arc.
Maddy Place continued her electric play. In the previous game against Juda, Place recorded a triple-double with 27 points, 10 rebounds and 11 steals. Against Benton, Place again led Black Hawk with 23 points and added six rebounds, six assists and eight steals to her box score.
Maddy Lange finished with 20 points for Black Hawk, while Mya Milz tallied a double-double (12 points, 10 rebounds) and finished two assists shy of a triple-double. Hailey Wellnitz had 12 rebounds.
Cambridge 55, Belleville 52
CAMBRIDGE — In a battle for first place in the Capitol South on Jan. 17, the Wildcats (10-5, 2-1) hung with the Blue Jays (11-4, 3-0), but it wasn’t meant to be.
Belleville trailed 25-31 at halftime, and made the home team sweat throughout the second half.
Four Wildcats reached double-figure in scoring — Addison Edge (16), Maddi DeSmet (12), Toria Devoe (11) and Nikole Schultz (11). DeSmet added 12 rebounds and four blocks while Schultz registered five steals.
Albany-Monticello 78, Potosi-Cassville 37
POTOSI — The top-ranked Space Stallions dominated their Six Rivers West foe on Jan. 17. AM had four players in double figures, led by freshman Heidi Olson, who had 25 points. Dalana Trumpy and Abby Hollis each finished with 16 points and Molly Olson added 13.
AM led 42-20 at halftime and didn’t allow a single PC player to score more than nine points.
Argyle-Pecatonica 97, Highland 32
HIGHLAND — Coming off back-to-back frustrating home losses, AP find the groove again in a dominating crossover road tilt at Highland on Jan. 17.
Kylie Butler led AP with 32 points and added eight assists and seven steals. Brooke Wellnitz tallied 29 points, 19 rebounds and six assists. Loretta Tisch finished the night with 19 points and five steals, and Avari Steiner ended up with 11 points, six boards, six assists and four steals.
In all, AP had 22 steals, assisted 26 of 40 baskets and hit eight threes.
In other area girls basketball action on Jan. 17, River Ridge defeated Juda 53-23 and New Glarus trounced Waterloo 67-31.
