SOUTH WAYNE — The Warriors had a memorable season, finishing tied for the Six Rivers East title for the sixth straight year and turning heads with a new head coach.
That season came to an end Feb. 25 in a WIAA Division 5 regional semifinal loss to Burlington Catholic Central, 33-31.
The Warriors committed just six turnovers in the game and had nine steals on defense, but shot just 8 of 39 from the field (20.5%), including a 2-for-20 mark from 3-point land.
Junior Tara Wellnitz led the team with 12 points, though seven came from the free throw line. She was 1-for-4 from 3-point range and 2 of 10 total from the field. She added four rebounds, five assists and three steals.
Fellow junior Raylin Peterson scored nine points on 3 of 10 shooting and had six rebounds.
Senior Tatum Baumgartner tallied two steals, two assists, two rebounds six points on 2 of 11 shooting. Kendra Haldiman added five rebounds.
Division 4
Mineral Point 69, Darlington 25
MINERAL POINT — The Redbirds had won eight games in a row before running into a buzzsaw. On Feb. 25, unbeaten and top-ranked Mineral Point decimated Darlington in a WIAA Division 4 regional semifinal.
The Pointers jumped out to a 7-0 lead out of the games and led 36-16 at halftime. Darlington was efficient when able to shoot — hitting 7 of 11 shots, all from inside the arc. However, the Redbirds did not attempt a 3-pointer, and, even more troubling for the offense, committed 23 first-half turnovers.
Cayla Golackson and Taylor Wedig led Darlington with six points each. Blair Watters had a double-double for Mineral Point, with 16 points and 10 rebounds. She added four assists, four steals and three blocked shots. Laci Lindsey scored 11 points for the Pointers, and Mallory Lindsey added 10 points and five steals. Mineral Point committed just 12 turnovers and had 27 steals, while also hitting 9 of 26 3-point attempts.
Darlington finishes the season with a 16-10 record overall, while Mineral Point (26-0) will host fourth-ranked La Crosse Aquinas (21-4) in a sectional semifinal March 3.
