Albany remains undefeated; Monticello tops Black Hawk

ALBANY — The Comets, ranked No. 4 in Division 5 with an 18-0 record, trounced the Orioles 86-20 in a Six Rivers East Conference game on Tuesday, Jan. 24.

Eight different players scored for Albany, led by Alana Durtschi with 21 points. With a team-leading 13 rebounds, too, Durtschi recorded a double-double. Abby Hollis was the second-highest scorer with 16 points, including two 3-pointers. Anna Ellinger tallied 12 points, while Myah Johnson and Avary Briggs put up 10 points each. McKenna Broughton, who scored eight points, also grabbed eight rebounds.

Jaylin Hartwig was the heart and soul of the Argyle offense, scoring 18 of the team’s 20 points. She went 3-for-4 from the free-throw line with one three. Lexi Wonders scored the remaining two points.


MONTICELLO 51, BLACK HAWK 30

MONTICELLO — The Ponies took the Warriors down a notch, with a Six Rivers East Conference victory on Tuesday, Jan. 24. In the last meeting on Dec. 15, Black Hawk defeated Monticello 35-27 with a double-double from Jaliyah Collins.

This time around, Ellie Gustafson recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Jaden Zuber also scored 12 points, going 3-for-4 from beyond the arc. Dalana Trumpy tallied 11 points, while Karlee Wilkins finished with 10 points. Molly Olson scored four of her six points at the charity stripe with four steals.


NEW GLARUS 61, CAMBRIDGE 43

CAMBRIDGE — The Knights put another game between them and the second-place Blue Jays with a Capitol South Conference victory on Tuesday, Jan. 24.

New Glarus had just a six-point lead at halftime and pulled away for 34 points in the second half. Alex Atwell and Lindsey Schadewalt had big second halves, scoring nine and 19 points, respectively. 

Schadewalt finished with 26 points, leading the conference with 23.1 ppg. Atwell tallied 16 points and is the third-highest scorer in conference with 13.7 ppg. She is also second in conference with nine rebounds per game. Elle Lancaster put up seven points — all in the first half — while Jordyn Runde chipped in six points. Grace Nommensen — third in conference with 3.7 assists per game — finished with four points, while Bella Brenkman made two free throws. 


SAUK PRAIRIE 59, MONROE 35 

SAUK PRAIRIE — Despite a 7-2 run to start the second half, the Cheesemakers dropped a Badger West Conference game on Tuesday, Jan. 24. 

Monroe and Sauk remained tied at 4-4 until the Eagles went on a 14-0 with just over seven minutes left in the first half.

Taylor Jacobson led the Cheesemakers with 12 points, shooting 5 of 9 from the free-throw line. Allison Wunschel sank two 3-pointers for her six-point total, while Abbey Matley and Sydnee Conway each tallied five points. Lindsay Leuzinger also drained a three, followed by two points each from Sophie Golembiewski and Sophia Douglas.


BRODHEAD 72, CLINTON 52

CLINTON — The Cardinals got back to winning ways with a 20-point victory over the Cougars in a Rock Valley Conference matchup on Tuesday, Jan. 24.

 Brodhead had a 31-19 lead at halftime and didn’t look back, scoring 10 more points in the second half.

Abbie Dix and Alecia Dahl scored 23 and 22 points, respectively, to lead the Cardinals. Addison Yates and Alexis Kammerer tallied seven points each, while Taetum Hoesly chipped in five points. The remaining eight points of offense came from Jaelyn Hilliard and Makenna Schooff, who had four points each.


MINERAL POINT 55, DARLINGTON 31

MINERAL POINT — The Redbirds let an early 7-1 lead disappear in a SWAL Conference game on Tuesday, Jan. 24.

Darlington jumped out to a 7-1 lead to start the game but scored just four more points the rest of the half, as Mineral Point went on a 23-0 run.

Kylie Butler led the Redbirds with 11 points and five steals. The next highest scorer was Jaylyn Schwartz with seven points. On the glass, Jaidyn Evenstad grabbed four rebounds. Darlington had just nine opportunities at the free-throw line and cashed in on five of them. In comparison, Mineral Point went 13-for-22 at the charity stripe.


BARNEVELD 66, PECATONICA 39

BLANCHARDVILLE — After eight strong minutes of play, the Vikings fatigued leading to a conference loss on Tuesday, Jan. 24.

“Barneveld is a good team,” Pecatonica head coach Linda Hendrickson said. “I thought we played okay until about the eight-minute mark when we just ran out of energy. I thought we handled their press fairly well but missed too many bunnies.”

Chloe Schraepfer tallied 18 points — 16 of which came in the first half. She went 3-for-3 from the free-throw line with a three. Anna Tisch also scored in double figures with 11 points, going six of eight at the charity stripe. Bri Peterson scored four points, while Maddie Hirsch, Kaisen Kolb and Diana Hendrickson finished with two points each.

Although they didn’t score, freshmen Loretta Tisch and Brooklyn Johnsrud contributed significant minutes.

In other local girls basketball, Juda defeated Faith Christian 58-22 for its second win of the season.
