MONROE - Junior Matt Hodgson scored the game-winning goal to give the Monroe soccer team a thrilling 4-3 win over Sun Prairie on Thursday at Honey Creek Park.

Hodgson scored the game-winning goal at 68 minutes, 43 seconds on an assist from Kevin Noriega, to defeat the Cardinals, who came into the game with just one loss.

"I knew Sun Prairie was a very good and talented Division 1 team," Monroe coach Tony Vasquez said. "I wanted them to play hard for 80 minutes and give us a chance to be in the game and win. They played tough and did it."

The Cardinals (7-2) jumped out to a 1-0 lead, but the Cheesemakers rebounded. Monroe senior Nick Gross scored a goal at 27:09 on an assist from senior Corey Flannery to tie the game at 1 at the half.

The Cheesemakers (5-2-1, 1-1 Badger South) took the lead in the second half on junior Taylor Teasdale's goal on a pass from Jesse Keizer at 41:22. Monroe junior Blake Duffy extended the lead to 3-1, scoring goal on a penalty kick at 49:55.

The Cardinals battled back and scored two goals to tie the game at 3. That set the stage for Hodgson's heroics. Monroe senior goalkeeper Lucas Koch had 11 saves.

It was the clash of two different styles.

"They (Sun Prairie) like to posses the ball and we like to run crazy," Vasquez said. "We got them to play our game a little bit. Our guys probably played their best game of the year."
