Evansville-Albany, NG-M pick up wins

NEW GLARUS - Gabe Noyce and Patrick Elzen ran for touchdowns in the third quarter to lead New Glarus-Monticello to a 17-7 win over Iowa-Grant in the season opener on Friday.

Noyce scored on an 8-yard run and Elzen had a 34-yard TD run that capped the comeback to give Monroe alumnus Desie Breadon his first head coaching win. New Glarus-Monticello's Jim Chenoweth rushed for 60 yards on 16 carries. Elzen rushed for 56 yards on seven carries and scored one touchdown.

The Knights' defense forced three Panthers turnovers - two interceptions and one fumble.

River Valley 32, Brodhead-Juda 0

BRODHEAD - The Blackhawks shut down the Cardinals in the non-conference season opener.

River Valley racked up 317 total rushing yards to roll past Brodhead-Juda. River Valley's Clayton Nelson tossed a 47-yard TD pass to Jack Radlinger to give the Blackhawks a 7-0 lead early in the second quarter. River Valley's Seth Liegel then scored on a 16-yard run to extend the Blackhawks' lead to 14-0 at the half. Liegel added a 69-yard TD run in the third quarter. Brodhead-Juda, which was limited to just 127 total rushing yards, doesn't have much time to recover. The Cardinals host Walworth Big Foot, ranked No. 2 in the Associated Press medium school division, next week.

Evansville-Albany 14, Sparta 13

SPARTA - Evansville-Albany running back Michael Johnson rushed for 153 yards and scored two touchdowns to lead the Blue Devils to a win.

Johnson scored on a 7-yard run in the first quarter and added a 9-yard TD run in the fourth quarter to seal it. Quarterback David Jenkins was 3-of-6 passing for 56 yards and two interceptions.
