LA CROSSE — The Cheesemakers finished second overall in the 800-meter relay race at the WIAA Division 2 state meet June 25.

Charlie Wiegel, Lucas Sathoff, Lucas Flom and JT Seagreaves teamed up to finish with a time of 1:30.25 — just 11/100ths of a second off the pace of Ellsworth, which won the state title at 1:30.14.

The grouping found their stride and cut their time down as the season went on. The quartet ran a 1:34.16 just 10 days before at the Brodhead Regional, and clocked in at 1:31.16 in the Whitewater Sectional June 17.

All four runners for Monroe are eligible to return next season. Flom, Sathoff and Seagreaves will be entering their senior year of high school in the fall, while Wiegel will be a junior. Alternates Jakar Broitzman (soon-to-be sophomore) and Egor Sereda (soon-to-be senior) also will return.

Seagreaves, Broitzman, Sathoff and junior Jason Carpenter finished ninth in the 1,600-meter relay (3:31.57). Jefferson (3:21.92) was first, nearly four seconds ahead of Freedom for the title. Last-place Grafton (3:34.43) was less than 3 seconds behind Monroe.

Carpenter finished sixth in the 300-meter hurdles (40.93), 1/100th of a second ahead of Winneconne sophomore Ayden Hart. Lodi junior Lucas Heyroth (39.19) was the state champion.

Sathoff was 10th in the 800-meter run (2:01.51), more than six seconds faster than his regional time (2:07.79). Shorewood sophomore Nathan Cumberbatch was first overall (1:55.25).

Monroe’s other state competitor, Caleb Bunker, fouled out of the shot put event.

On the girl’s side, Bre Lambert was ninth in the 400-meter dash (1:00.12). Champion Eliana Sheplee, a freshman from Rice Lake, blew away the state record with a time of 55.37 seconds. The previous record (56.09) was set in 1985 by Richland Center’s Kim Tiller.

Elsewhere in Division 2, Brodhead-Juda freshman Addison Yates took third in the high jump at 5-feet, 3-inches, just one inch shy of champion Kallie Knoble of La Crosse Logan. Yates was 12th in the long jump (16-3.25).

Brodhead-Juda teammate Madelynn McIntyre wrapped up her illustrious career as a Cardinal with ninth- and fourth-place finishes. McIntyre was fourth in the 3,200-meter run (11:25.66), 20 seconds off the pace of champion Mikaela Helling of Two Rivers. McIntyre was ninth in the 1,600-meter run (5:13.186), finishing just 4/1,000ths of a second ahead of Osceola’s Lauren Ellefson. Northland Pines freshman Nora Gremban won the event with a time of 4:56.95. Gremban also won the 800 (2:14.43), with Brodhead-Juda freshman Kalena Riemer taking ninth (2:25.35).

On the boys side, Brodhead-Juda junior Josiah Engen was tied for 15th in the high jump (5-10). Wisconsin Heights-Barneveld senior De’Shawn Barsness was the champion (6-4), defeating Edgewood’s Caden Thomas in a tiebreaker.

Sugar River’s 3,200-meter relay team of Matthew Loshaw, Conor McCoy, Thomas Nelson and Carter Scholey finished 17th (8:44.39), with Little Chute (8:11.03) bringing home the title. Scholey was DQ’ed from the 3,200-meter run.

Durand’s Parker Schneider picked up the state title in the event with a time of 4:26.71. Schneider was also the state champion in the 800-meter run. Guenther was seventh in the 800, finishing with a time of 2:02.08.
