HIGHLAND - Pecatonica junior pitcher Cora Demler ran into trouble just once on Monday, but that was enough for the Highland softball team to defeat the Vikings 3-1.
Demler faced the minimum three batters in every inning but the fourth, when Highland's top four hitters produced a bunt single and three consecutive doubles.
"Cora is an off-speed pitcher and a purist might not like that," Pecatonica coach Chuck Meyer said. "But she keeps it around the plate and keeps batters off balance. It was a well-played game."
Demler finished with five strikeouts and did not issue a walk.
The Vikings (4-3) managed just one hit - freshman Emily Scoville's second-inning single - against Highland pitcher Emily Wolfe, who finished with 10 strikeouts and two walks.
CUBA CITY 10, DARLINGTON 3
DARLINGTON - The Redbirds dropped a conference game to rival Cuba City.
Darlington (0-8, 0-5 SWAL) had 10 hits and was led by junior Anna Fitzsimons who was 2-for-2 and junior Cassidy Cox who went 2-for-4 with two doubles. Darlington senior Laura Steiner pitched seven innings and gave up five earned runs on 12 hits.
