EVANSVILLE - In a preview of what could turn into a regional showdown, the Monroe boys soccer team rallied to tie Evansville 2-2 on Thursday.
Monroe junior Blake Duffy scored the first goal on an assist from senior Corey Flannery to give the Cheesemakers a 1-0 lead at 9 minutes, 12 seconds. Evansville (18-3-2) scored one goal about 13 minutes later to tie the game at 1 at the half.
The Blue Devils took a 2-1 lead early in the second half. The Cheesemakers rallied and junior Taylor Teasdale scored the game-tying goal on an assist from junior Matt Hodgson at 76:31.
"Evansville is a really good team," Monroe coach Tony Vasquez said. "They (Monroe) wanted to prove that we can play with them. I knew it would be tough and we will probably play them again."
Vasquez said he wasn't sure how long Teasdale would play after he suffered a leg injury earlier this week.
"The other kids were comfortable because he is a big part of our team on defense," Vasquez said. "With young kids, a team may get intimidated by their record. Everyone played hard and never gave up."
Monroe (9-7-3) received a No. 7 seed and will host Platteville-Lancaster at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9 in the first round of the regional. If the Cheesemakers win, they would likely play at No. 2 seed Evansville.
"It's not as good of a seed as I thought we would get," Vasquez said.
