MONROE - The Monroe girls tennis team won every set to steamroll Portage in a Badger Conference crossover match, 7-0, on Monday.
Monroe junior Kristin McArdle wasted no time in breezing by Portage's Katrina Schmudlach, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 1 singles.
"I just want to go out there and give it my best to try to get some more wins for our team," McArdle said.
McArdle, who is in her second year as the Cheesemakers No. 1 singles player, said she has learned the different playing styles of opponents and how to adapt to win points.
She also knows that she has made strides and improved since last year.
"I have been working on my serve because it needed work and also coming into the net more to put points away," she said.
Monroe's No. 2 single's player, sophomore Ellie Shuda, defeated Cassie Vanwormer, 6-1, 6-0. At No. 3 singles, Kiera Berger defeated Portage's Jenna Homan, 6-1, 6-1.
The Cheesemakers' No. 4 singles player, sophomore Lily Priewe, beat Brittany Davis in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2.
Senior Ashley Hermanson and junior Kelsey Erickson defeated Portage's Nicole Cummings and Whitney Dewald, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 1 doubles.
"We are aggressive at the net," Hermanson said. "We try to put away most of our shots so we can win easily."
Erickson, who played No. 3 doubles last year, has made a seamless jump to playing No. 1 doubles with Hermanson.
"We have communicated fairly well so far," Erickson said. "There is just a little miscommunication sometimes."
Erickson said the key to doubles is trying not to get too excited when hitting a winner.
The Cheesemakers' senior duo of Taylor Weis and McKenzie Bruce defeated Portage's tandem, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 2 doubles.
At No. 3 doubles, Monroe seniors Gwen Sutter and Emily Grossen defeated Rea Scherbert and Kim Hicks, 6-2, 6-1.
The Monroe junior varsity defeated Portage, 11-1. Monroe's next dual match is a Badger Conference crossover at Sauk Prairie on Thursday.
