MONROE - Brewers co-player manager Rooney Janecke understands that anything's possible when a team is clicking on all cylinders, like they were in a 13-0 win over Argyle in a Home Talent League Western Section first round playoff game on Sunday.
Brewers pitchers Cody Boals and Ben Korth combined on a five-hit shutout. Boals pitched six innings and gave up just one hit and Korth tossed three innings of shutout relief.
Monroe pounded out 15 hits and 10 different players had hits.
"I just wanted to throw strikes and get ahead," Boals said. "The runs really took the weight off my shoulder. It relaxes you when you are pitching. We were just excited to get a good playoff win."
With the win, Monroe (10-7) advances to the second round and will play at Dodgeville Aug. 14.
"We just want to keep our hot bats going," said Janecke, who was 2 for 3 with four RBIs. "You never know what will happen. Any team can win on any day."
Both Boals and Korth pitched solidly throughout the contest.
"They (Argyle) hit some balls right at us," Janecke said. "That's just how baseball is."
Argyle pitcher Jarret Bauman struggled with his control and got off to a rocky start. He walked Shaun Dascher and Mitch Marty laced a double down the third base line. Janecke then crushed a two-run double to left. Brewers co-player manager Lon Scheuerell then blooped an RBI single to left to give the Brewers a 3-0 lead.
It's been a big turnaround for the Brewers.
"At one point this year we went 30 innings without scoring a run," Janecke said. "As you go through the summer, you see more pitches and get more confident. When we score runs like that it takes pressure off the pitchers and hitters. We have been getting a lot of two-out hits with runners in scoring position. That is really big."
Monroe's Adam Scherer, who went 2 for 2 with two walks, singled leading off of the second. Matt Busjahn, who was 2 for 4, followed with a sacrifice bunt. Dascher came through with an RBI single and then Bauman hit three straight batters as the Brewers took a 5-0 lead. Scott White knocked in a run on a sacrifice fly and a second run scored on the play after a wild throw home to give the Brewers a 7-0 lead. The other Brewers with multi-hit games included Marty (2 for 3) and Boals (2 for 5).
"They hit one ball hard in the first inning and we are down 3-0," Argyle manager Travis Erickson said. "That set the tone."
Erickson said that Bauman did get frustrated with pitches he thought were strikes on the corners.
"We were not getting any calls," Erickson said. "He was getting so frustrated. I told Tyler (Ritschard) that if you are hitting guys we are not going to get the strikes on the corner."
Janecke had a two-run single in the third and Jake Teasdale had an RBI single in the sixth to give the Brewers a 12-0 lead. Scheuerell and Dascher each had two RBIs.
Janecke doesn't care who the Brewers will play in the second round.

"It doesn't matter," Janecke said. "Either way we have to play well in order to win. You have to beat good teams in order to advance."
