SOUTH WAYNE - Things appeared abysmal for the Warriors and promising for the Ponies. Then the second half started.
Black Hawk erupted for a 34-15 second-half drubbing of Barneveld (11-6, 7-4 Six Rivers East) to make up for a sluggish first half in a 49-41 boys basketball victory Saturday afternoon that locked up an outright Six Rivers East title.
Warriors senior Joey Hartwig led the charge once again with 18 points, nine coming in the final quarter of play, while junior and frontcourt mate Michael Place added 14.
Barneveld's Kyle Thompson matched Hartwig's 18 and hit four shots from beyond the 3-point arc.
Black Hawk (18-1, 11-1) cut the 11-point halftime deficit to six points at 33-27 through three quarters before a 22-8 fourth quarter crushed Monticello's hopes to share the title, while the Eagles finished third.
Dodgeville 76, Pecatonica 35
Evidently the Dodgers are morning people.
Despite Saturday's non-conference game being moved up to just after noon at 12:30 p.m., Dodgeville (13-4 overall) had no problems adjusting as it scored 50 points in the middle quarters of a convincing road win.
Senior Bryan Rundhaug had a game-high 25 points and hit five 3s for Dodgeville, which got 10 players into the scoring column.
Pecatonia was led by Brandon Meudt's 9 points as eight Vikings scored.
