NEW GLARUS - The Monroe Brewers held off the Tourists, 3-1, to pick up a Sunday League win.
Cody Boals pitched a complete game, allowing seven hits and two walks while striking out seven hitters for Monroe.
"Today was hot, humid, and I was sweating. I'm conditioned for this," Boals said. "Usually the first inning or two I'm trying to hit my spots and feel out an umpire, so those are usually my toughest innings. But I get stronger as the game goes on."
New Glarus picked up their lone run against Boals in the first inning. Leadoff hitter Griff Rear singled to right field, and went to third on a base hit by Wade Hanna. He scored on a sac fly from Mark Hamilton to tie the game at 1-1.
Monroe's Justin Hahn doubled to left in the first with one out and scored off of an errant throw by the Tourists first baseman to third base.
Shawn Dascher scored Monroe's second run in the third on a one-out single by Lon Schuerell. However, the Brewers stranded runners at second and third to end the inning.
"Cody did a great job of keeping us in the game by mixing it up on the mound. It was nice to punch across a few runs to help him out though," Schuerell, Monroe's co-player-manager said. "And we had great defense. For every miscue we redeemed ourselves with a double play or making another nice play in the field."
New Glarus could not find their groove very well at the plate, nor on the basepaths. Monroe catcher Adam Scherer threw out three baserunners trying to steal second, and New Glarus' Ryan Brugger was called out on an interference at home on another pick-off attempt by Scherer.
"Adam was huge for us back there. He probably kept a few runs from scoring all by himself," Schuerell said.
Dasher scored Monroe's third run in the fifth. After reaching on a walk, Dasher advanced to second when Hahn grounded out and swiped both third and home on back-to-back passed balls.
Tourists pitcher Kyle Sparky struck out four, gave up just five hits, walked three and hit a batter. New Glarus committed two errors in the field.
"We got good pitching from Kyle," Tourists' player-manager Stein Rear said. "We still can't hit the ball. But we gave ourselves a chance in the ninth, too."
New Glarus stranded runners on the corners to end the game. With one out Boals got Stein Rear to fly out to shallow left and then Cody Austin grounded out to first.
Wiota 7, Blanchardville 3
BLANCHARDVILLE - Brock Bidlingmaier picked up the win on the mound for the Indians Sunday.
Wiota scored a run in the second and made it a 3-0 lead in the third when Merrill Brunson launched a two-run home run. Brunson's third RBI came in the fifth, which gave Wiota all the runs it needed. Brunson finished the game 3-for-4.
Milton Kurschner took the loss on the mound for the Bullets.
