Black Hawk holds off Juda by 9

SOUTH WAYNE - The Black Hawk girls basketball team capped an unbeaten conference season with a 41-32 win over Juda Thursday night.

Black Hawk (21-0, 12-0 Six Rivers East), ranked second in the Associated Press Division 5 poll, has now won three straight conference championships. Both teams got off to slow starts with the Warriors leading 5-4 at the end of the first quarter. The Panthers outscored the Warriors 14-11 in the second quarter to take a two-point half-time lead.

The Warriors outscored the Panthers 15-9 in the third quarter to regain the lead.

Black Hawk coach Mike Flanagan said he was happy with his team's defensive scheme and Juda's Ellen Kiser brings an element they usually don't see.

Black Hawk freshman Jen Wellnitz scored 13 points and had 9 points and 11 rebounds in the first half to lead the Warriors. Black Hawk senior Rachel Rygh added nine points.

Juda senior Aly Pierce scored nine points. Kiser and senior Alycia Grenzow added eight each. With the loss, Juda drops to 16-4, 7-3.

New Glarus 62, Waterloo 40

WATERLOO - New Glarus came out strong with a pressure defense and rolled to the Capitol South Conference win.

New Glarus senior Chelsea Holler scored 20 points to lead the Glarner Knights. The Knights (8-12, 2-7 Capitol South) outscored waterloo 17-4 in the first quarter and built a 30-13 lead at halftime.

"I told them we have to have the mind set to jump out strong," New Glarus coach Megan Scheele said. "They set the tone early and kept it going the whole game."

New Glarus sophomore Anya Schween, sophomore Alexis Hanson and junior Alycia Atwell each scored eight points.

Brodhead 58, Clinton 34

CLINTON - The Cardinals received big games from sophomore Taylor Douglas and freshman Carly Mohns, en route to a win over the Cougars.

Douglas scored a game-high 15 points and Mohns had 13 to lead the Cardinals. Brodhead (14-7, 12-3 Rock Valley South) built a 24-12 halftime lead. The Cardinals outscored the Cougars 34-22 in the second half to put the game away.

Barneveld 67, Pecatonica 47

BLANCHARDVILLE - Barneveld had three players in double figures and cruised past Pecatonica.

Vikings sophomore Lizzy Britt scored 15 points and had seven rebounds. Shanne Krueger finished with 12 points.

The Eagles were led by Madison Laube who scored 15 points and Hailey Cannoy who added 13. Krista McSherry chipped in 11.
