LAKE GENEVA - The Monroe volleyball team opened the season with a three-set non-conference loss to Lake Geneva Badger 25-20, 25-14, 25-14 on Tuesday.
"The scores didn't reflect the improvements we saw tonight," Monroe coach Heidi Witt said. "A lot of it was technical errors - the missed passing and serves. If we clean that up it's a different game."
Monroe senior Kari Jordan had nine kills for the Cheesemakers. Monroe sophomore Alicia Kuester had six kills and one block. Monroe junior Paige Murphy had a team-high 16 assists.
Haley Doherty had a team-high three aces and Hannah Neuenschwander had two aces.
The Cheesemakers played an extra set against Lake Geneva Badger for extra preparation for Madison Edgewood and won 25-15. It's the start of seven matches this week.
The Cheesemakers have three sophomores and four juniors on the varsity and return just three players from last year's team.
The Cheesemakers play at Edgewood Thursday and host the Monroe Invitational at 9 a.m. Saturday.
"They know they can play at a high level," Witt said. "We just need to play with more consistency. The girls always say they would rather play than practice. This will be a test for that.
"It's a way to improve quickly. They have to go up there with a winning attitude. They have to go and play and not have any regrets. Just play the game and have fun."
Monroe sophomore Chloe Schroeder also had one block.
Lake Geneva Badger's Emma DuMez had a match-high 17 kills and teammate Sydney Collins had 16 aces.
