BARNEVELD - The Eagles patched together a staff to stay fresh for today's regional final with Pecatonica.
Barneveld started No. 2 hurler Michael Schlimgen and first went to ace Kyle Thompson with one out in the fourth inning to defeat the Orioles for the third time this season, 6-0, in Tuesday's Division 4 regional semifinal.
Argyle loaded the bases in the fourth before Thompson emphatically wriggled off the hook. Orioles junior Andy Bohlman had one of his club's four hits, a double. The southpaw also chewed up all six innings on the hill, fanning six and walking two.
"The second half of this season, the guys have given us a great effort," Argyle coach Sean Leary said.
Josh Slaney went a cool 3-for-3 for half of Barneveld's hits, and had the game-winning RBI in the second inning.
NO. 1 BURLINGTON CATHOLIC CENTRAL 11, NO. 4 MONTICELLO 4
The Ponies had a golden opportunity to break through with the bases loaded and two outs in a 6-4 fourth-inning deficit against Burlington Catholic Central.
Monticello senior Jacob Edge hit a gapper, but was robbed of a base hit on a running catch by Hilltopper's center fielder. The Hilltoppers then broke the game open with a four-run fifth and cruised to a WIAA Division 4 regional semifinal win over the Ponies Tuesday night.
"It's the closest 11-4 game I have ever seen," Monticello coach Jason Pinnow said. "If he doesn't make that catch, we probably go ahead 7-6. That was a big momentum boost. That kind of knocked us down a few notches and really took the wind out of our sails."
