Richard O. Rupnow, of Monroe, entered into eternal life on Wednesday, October 9, 2019 at the age of 90. He was born on April 24, 1929 in Monroe, to Otto and Helen (Doyle) Rupnow.
Richard attended St. Victor’s Grade School and graduated from Monroe High School. He attended Marquette University Law School, graduating with a Juris Doctor degree.
After several years practicing law with The American in Milwaukee, Richard went into private practice, and was City Attorney in Shullsburg, WI, for many years. He retired from his law practice in 1990. After retirement, Richard enjoyed walking several miles daily, and enjoyed working out at the YMCA in Monroe.
On June 3, 1995, in Monroe, WI, Richard was united in marriage to Sylvia Purcell.
Richard was an avid sports fan, and enjoyed following national and college football and basketball. He enjoyed golfing and fishing with his buddies, going out to dinner and traveling in both the United States and abroad.
Richard was an active member of St. Clare of Assisi Parish, where he served on parish counsel, and was a regular usher.
Richard was a loyal friend, and made special efforts to stay in touch with friends, and visit them throughout their entire lifetime, especially during difficult times.
His love of conversation combined with his quick wit and lifelong talent of storytelling endeared him to all who knew him. He will always be remembered for his love of family and friends as well as his great sense of humor.
Richard is survived by his beloved wife of 24 years, Sylvia (Hughes/Purcell) Rupnow. He is further survived by his 9 step-children: Dee (Bob) Lorenz, Lorrie (Gerrit) Debruin, Vicky (Dave) Schneider, Gerry Purcell, Colleen Purcell, Steve (Lori) Purcell, Kathy (Tom) Bohn, Kevin (Lori) Purcell, and Cindy (Dan) Vickerman; 20 step-grandchildren and 8 step-great-grandchildren.
He is also survived by his brother, Roger (Romay) Rupnow and their children: Dan (Vicky) Rupnow, David (Beth) Rupnow, Kathy (Jim) Marshall, Tom (Charlotte) Rupnow and Marcia (Stuart) Goulter, as well as great nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Richard was predeceased by his parents, Otto and Helen (Doyle) Rupnow and numerous cousins.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, October 14, 2019, at St. Clare of Assisi Parish at St. Victor Catholic Church with Monsignor Larry Bakke celebrant. Burial will immediately follow service, at Calvary Cemetery in Monroe. Visitation will be on Monday at the church from 9:00 am to 11:00 am, with Rosary at 9:00 am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Richard’s name to St. Clare of Assisi Holy Ground Fund.
