Carol F. Prain, age 87, of Monroe passed away on Thursday, August 31, 2023 at St. Clare Friedensheim. She was born the daughter of Walter and Beatrice (Fleischman) Knippel on November 3, 1935 in Wausau, WI. She graduated from Wausau High School. She was united in marriage to Robert “Bob” Prain on February 2, 1957 and together they had five daughters.
Carol worked at St. Clare Hospital from 1974 until 2000 in the accounting office as an Accounts Payable Representative. After her retirement she continued assisting the accounting office by volunteering her time whenever she was needed. She served on the Board for Human Services and was a Girl Scout Leader; she also volunteered countless hours with the United Way and the Jaycees. While she lived in Merrill, WI she helped start the ARC of the United States- Lincoln County Chapter where she worked toward establishing day care centers, trainable class, and other recreational, educational, and vocational opportunities for mentally handicapped people. She was presented with the Outstanding Young Women of America award in 1967 for all her work. When she moved to Monroe in 1968, she volunteered for the Apostolate to the Handicapped and Badger Camp whereshe was a loyal volunteer and advocate for the handicapped.She was a longtime member of St. Victor’s Catholic Church in Monroe.
Carol is survived by her children, Linda (Anita Fischer) Prain of Carmel, NY, Sharon (Jeff) Weyenberg of Statesville, NC, Lisa Prain of Verona, and Mary (Don) Dodd of Brodhead; grandchildren, Matt Weyenberg, Michael (Brittany) Weyenberg, Haley (fiancé, Emma Gratz) Dodd, and Lindsey Dodd; great-grandchildren, Liam and Luca Weyenberg; brother, Jim (Kathy) Knippel of Las Vegas, NV; and many nieces, nephews, extended relatives, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Susan Prain; siblings, Walter, Jack, William, Andrew, Chuck, Raymond, Rosemary, Larry, and Peter; and the father of her children, Bob Prain.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, September 6, 2023 at St. Clare of Assisi Parish at St. Victor Catholic Church with Father Chahm Gahng as celebrant. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 5, 2023 from 4:00-6:00PM at SHRINER HAGER GOHLKE Funeral Home. Condolences may be sent to the family at: shriner111.com.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Carol’s name to the Apostolate to the Handicapped or GreenCo Industries.
