MONROE - A Monroe man who intentionally hit his roommate with his vehicle after leaving Sir Buk's tavern in March was sentenced Wednesday to two years in prison.

Jose A. Velasco, 22, Monroe, was sentenced in Green County Circuit Court after pleading no contest to drunken driving and use of a dangerous weapon. He faced up to seven years in prison and up to $8,000 in fines as part of the plea agreement for the class H and unclassified misdemeanor charges.

According to a Green County Sheriff's Department report, Velasco and the victim, Victor Rosales-Martinez, 22, Monroe, were at Sir Buk's, where they had an argument. Rosales-Martinez left the establishment and proceeded to walk toward the City of Monroe when he was struck by a vehicle driven by Velasco at 12:28 a.m. March 6 on County KK east of County K in the Town of Monroe.

The court on Wednesday dismissed one count of first-degree recklessly endangering safety, a class F felony, resisting an officer, a class A misdemeanor, and failure to obey an officer, an unclassified misdemeanor. He originally faced more than 20 years in prison and more than $43,000 in fines.
