MONROE - A trial date was set Tuesday for a Princeton man charged with first-degree reckless homicide after an inmate overdosed on drugs that he smuggled into jail.

Danny Douglas Mitchell II, 45, was granted a week-long trial to take place the week of Dec. 5.

Mitchell was charged in 2015 with reckless homicide by delivery of a controlled substance, contributing to the delinquency of a minor resulting in death, and delivering illegal articles to an inmate.

Mitchell's charges were filed more than two years after the inciting incident on Jan. 28, 2013 when he turned himself in to the Green County Jail on a probation hold. According to the police report, Mitchell was not subjected to a strip search and so was able to smuggle chewing tobacco and methadone, a controlled narcotic.

Mitchell allegedly delivered the methadone to inmate Kyle Peotter, 17, of Freeport. On Jan. 30, Peotter was found unresponsive in his cell and later died from what was determined to be a methadone overdose.

Surveillance footage from the night of Peotter's death revealed that Mitchell attempted to shield his cell from cameras by draping a blanket over the cell door. After the blanket was removed, he and Peotter passed a book back and forth between each other and apparently inhaled an unknown substance.

Mitchell denied having provided the methadone, pleading not guilty on June 18, 2015. Mitchell also claimed he had been strip searched upon his arrival to the jail, contrary to police records.

Peotter was jailed in September 2012 on felony charges of theft of a vehicle and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Eighteen days before his death, he pled no contest to the former charge.

Mitchell is currently incarcerated in the Rock County Jail.
