BOSTON - Deborah Carey of New Glarus Brewing is one of the three U.S. craft brewers to be rewarded for their entrepreneurial spirit by Ernst and Young.
Carey, Greg Koch of Stone Brewing and Richard Doyle and Daniel Kenary of Harpoon Brewery were recognized for their efforts as craft brewers in the Consumer Products category of Ernst and Young's Entrepreneur Of The Year program, now in its 25th year.
Ernst and Young is a a global professional financial services firm, with headquarters in London. Their celebration of entrepreneurs began in Milwaukee in 1986.
The three brewery winners will now compete at the national level for a chance to represent the U.S. on the world stage.
Carey, the founder and president of New Glarus Brewing Company, is described in a news release as "a classic entrepreneur." She started her first business, a graphic design studio, at the age of 16.
New Glarus Brewing was originally an anniversary gift to her husband, Dan Carey.
After raising capital to found the brewery, the couple produced their first beer in 1993.
The brewery is now the 21st largest craft brewer in the U.S., according to the Brewers Association.
Carey's commitment to Wisconsin-only distribution is fueling the company's success.
"I think it's a foolish business paradigm to add territory and pretend that you're growing your business," Carey said in a statement.
Carey said that adding territory for the sake of adding territory just wasn't in her nature and word of mouth marketing for much of her success.
"Craft breweries overlook that most beer is sold within a few hundred miles your brewery," she said. "If you can't sell your beer in your own state, then you're doing something wrong."
It wasn't until New Glarus broke the 5,000 barrel mark in annual production that Carey knew the venture would remain successful.
Now producing about 93,000 barrels a year, New Glarus still hasn't moved out of their home state.
"We have a fanatical cult following," she said.
Stone Brewing Co. is the 14th largest craft brewer in the U.S.
Harpoon Brewery is the ninth largest craft brewery in the U.S.
The regional winners will be considered for the Americas Entrepreneur Of The Year Award in the distribution and manufacturing category, which will be awarded in Palm Springs, Calif., at Ernst and Young's annual Strategic Growth Forum.
In 25 years, the Entrepreneur Of The Year program has expanded to more than 140 cities in more than 50 countries with awards presented annually to over 900 of the world's most successful and innovative entrepreneurs.
Each year the overall winner from each country gathers in Monte Carlo for the annual Ernst & Young World Entrepreneur Of The Year Award.
