Shown above is the Illinois Central gasoline engine driven "Motor Car 14," circa 1914. Nicknamed "the Scooter," it made one round-trip daily between Freeport and Madison. It was in operation about two years, was often out of commission and carried mail as well as passengers. While the motor car was in use, the regular Illinois Central steam train made one less round-trip daily. The horse-drawn bus carried passengers the half mile to or from the depot to the town center for 10 cents. The foundations of the depot and water tower are still visible along the Badger State trail at its intersection with Monticello's E. Lake Avenue.
