It's not necessary to travel miles from home for good quality, wholesome family entertainment. Summer fun is right here in our own backyard. A little more than a month away and approaching fast is the 2009 Green County Fair (July 22-26). We'd like to give you a preview and reminder of what the fair has to offer you and your family as you make summer plans. We strive to offer a variety of activities and entertainment, something for everybody.

First, and foremost, the fair is for the "kids" - kids of all ages. As usual, there will be all the 4-H, FFA, and other youth group entries and judging competitions for your viewing - everything from house plants to cows to photography and lots more. And, don't forget the "open class," open to any Wisconsin resident. You can showcase your talents and compete side by side with your neighbors. Young or old, competition is fun and educational.

Mr. Ed's Magical Midway will debut this year with carnival rides, food and fun games.

Daily armband specials will be offered at varying times each day and there will be free admission to the fairgrounds on Saturday for children under 12 until 1:30 p.m.

For the kids, new to the Green County Fair this year will be Bob Bohm's Family Entertainment shows, with scheduled stage performances and strolling performances on the grounds. Also for the kids is the Pedal Pushers Tractor Pull, open to children ages 3 to 10. Kid power and determination rule as they push to see who can pedal that tractor the farthest with the most weight and come away with a trophy.

If you think the kids have true grit with their pedal pull, wait until you see the adult celebrity pushers, just trying to keep up with the kids. One special class of celebrity pushers will be featured during the kids pull.

This year's grandstand schedule offers a mix of free and paid entertainment. Free as usual will be the Three Hills Rodeo, Badger State Tractor Pull, Horse Pull, Harness Racing and a performance by country entertainers Blackhawk - three seasoned singers, songwriters and musicians creating the unique sound that is Blackhawk.

Returning is the "crash 'em, smash 'em" Demolition Derby, sure to be a crowd pleaser as always, with tickets going on sale Monday, July 20.

With the ability to "entertain anybody, any time and anywhere" country star Neal McCoy hits the stage Friday evening. Whether performing to a stadium of thousands or performing for troops in far flung places, you can always expect the unexpected from McCoy. Tickets will go on sale July 18 with a variety of seating opportunities being offered.

After all the fun and entertainment, it's time to do what we all do best at the fair - eat. Cheese curds, cream puffs, pie, ice cream, cotton candy, popcorn - let's face it, we'll diet next week!

In the weeks approaching the fair, be sure to look for more, detailed information on the Green County Fair's happenings.
