MONROE - Felony theft charges were filed this week in Green County Circuit Court alleging two partners in a home remodeling business stole thousands of dollars from a client in 2007 and 2008.

William Bearer, 47, and Julia A. Holland, 28, who share an address in South Wayne according to court records, face Class G and Class I felony charges of theft in a business setting. The criminal complaints against them were filed Monday, Aug. 5.

Bearer and Holland were contracted to make improvements on a farm residence on County J in New Glarus Township and worked as partners in the business "Handyman Services," which then had a Monroe address at a trailer at 560 W. 21st St.

The couple who hired Bearer and Holland took out loans to pay about $123,000 to cover their materials and labor.

Of this, court records allege Bearer and Holland retained more than $31,000 for their own personal use and even took their client's money to cover a vacation in Las Vegas.

The alleged thefts came to light when authorities received a 12-page handwritten letter from the client, detailing numerous workmanship and quality issues. The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection investigated the complaint.

Bearer and Holland have a joint initial appearance in court Sept. 9 at 1:15 p.m.
