MONROE - It's been a scramble, but Green and Lafayette counties are prepared for the June 5 governor recall election and ready with absentee ballots, just weeks after the May 8 primary.

"We made it," said Mike Doyle, Green County clerk. "It was almost impossible."

Usually a primary and general election are not so close. Primary votes have to be counted and verified by the Government Accountability Board before county clerks can print ballots, and this verification from the May 8 primary didn't come until 5 p.m. Friday, May 18.

"It creates a time crunch," Doyle said. His office sent an order late Friday for 20,000 ballots to Monroe's New Life Press, and had the ballots ready Monday morning to distribute to municipalities.

In Lafayette County, County Clerk Linda Bawden said her office put in a request for about 3,000 ballots Monday and had all election materials ready Tuesday for municipalities to pick up.

"There's a lot to get ready," she said. Each municipality gets tally sheets, inspector statements, poll books and ballots.

People can request absentee ballots by mail from their municipal clerk until Thursday, May 31 or request them in person until 5 p.m. Friday, June 1, according to the GAB.

As it stands now, people will not need photo identification to vote June 5. A new state law requiring a photo ID to vote is currently held up in court facing legal challenges.
