Peter E. Buol, age 85 of Monroe, died Friday, April 4, 2014 at Monroe Clinic Hospital. He was born on June 2, 1928 in Monroe, the son of Lawrence and Helena (Boegli) Buol.
Dad was a country kid and he attended the school on County Road B south of Monroe as well as the Round Grove School north of Monroe. He was born and raised in a time where country kids couldn't go to high school because of family financial issues and he was "farmed out" along with his brothers as a teenager. Hard work was rule of the day. He met the love of his life, Mary Maurer, while driving around and hanging out on the square in Monroe. They were married on Feb. 4, 1950. Dad worked as a hired man for Johnny and Evelyn Krattiger during the 1950's and became life-long friends of the Krattigers. He even worked as a pin setter at a Brodhead bowling alley after milking to support his growing family. In 1960, Dad and Mom moved to the John Rufi farm on Balls Mill Road, east of Monroe. They raised their seven children here on a 50/50 arrangement with Mr. Rufi. It was a small farm, but everyone agrees it was the best of times for the family. Radio station WEKZ and their "Chore time" music program was a constant companion during the morning milking. Dad had milking machines but the milk had to be carried to the cooler one pail at a time. Dad "retired" from farming in 1974 at the age of 45. He did not leave agriculture completely as he took a job at the Green Rock FS feed warehouse in Monroe. He enjoyed his work there and customers thought the world of him. He enjoyed taking coffee breaks at Bernie's Drive Inn on 19th Street. Dad took a night job at Monroe Specialty in 1976 in order to make ends meet. He retired from the feed mill in 1992 and Monroe Specialty shortly after. Retirement for Dad wasn't fishing, golfing or spending the winter in Florida. He never had time or money for those things. He was of simple means and that meant having coffee with his friends at McDonalds, watching the Weather Channel, and just sitting outside on a nice day. Dad wasn't able to give his kids great financial rewards, but he instilled in all of them a great work ethic and a great example of how to live one's life, as he didn't drink, smoke or gamble. He was proud of all of his kids as they are all successful in different ways.
He is survived by his wife, Mary; 7 children: George (Joyce) Buol, Scott (Robbyn) Buol, Becky (Donald) Brown, Cyndi (Gary) Goodman, Peter J. (Debbie) Buol, Brenda (Jack) Thomas and Michael (Deena) Buol; 16 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; a brother, LeRoy (Kathy) Buol; a sister, Louise (Walter) Steiner; several nieces and nephews; and a special pet cat, Sadie. He was preceded in death by his parents, 1 grandchild, Benjamin Scott Buol, a sister Rose Thrasher, and 5 brothers: Andrew, Valentine, Robert, Albert and Edward.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm Wednesday, April 9, 2014 at Shriner Hager Gohlke funeral home, with Pastor Rick Haworth officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery, Monroe. A visitation will be held Wednesday from 10:00 am, until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is being established in Peter's name.
