Eugene F. Schmid age 78 of Monroe, passed away on Saturday, August 21, 2010 at the Monroe Manor from complications after successfully and courageously battling 12 bouts of cancer the past 14 years. He fought this just like he fought everything else in his life. He was born December 4, 1931 in Monroe, the son of Merlyn and Gertrude (Affolter) Schmid. Eugene was a member of the Monticello High School graduating class of 1949. He started driving truck in 1947 and entered the U.S. Army in 1950 during the Korean Conflict. He was stationed in Manheim, Germany where he was a member of the 57th medium tank battalion second armored division earning the rank of corporal. Gene received his honorable discharge on January 25, 1952 following the death of his father. He returned home to continue his father's business. The love of his life was driving truck which he did for 55 years from coast to coast and border to border. He traveled over 5 million miles until 2002 when he was injured and could no longer drive. During his driving career he earned many honors which included Driver of the month in 1995 and the American Trucking Association 2 million mile club with no accidents. During his career he also worked as a safety supervisor and instructor for a large trucking company.
Gene was a charter member of two camping clubs, On the Road Again Camping Club and Excel of Wisconsin Camping Club. He cherished the friendship and comradeship shared with his fellow camping friends.
He married Marilyn Striker Kubly on January 13, 1995. He loved camping, fishing, boating and hobby farming with his wife and faithful dog, "Pepper".
A truck driver thru and thru, Gene loved to hit the open road an travel. He was a people person who loved to talk and tease. He loved all creatures large or small and could never harm any animal.
He is survived by his wife, Marilyn of Monroe; his dog, Pepper; two daughters, Kathy Pompo (Gary), and JoGena Howlett (Tom), both of Rockford, IL; four step-children, Lorry Geyer (Perry) of Claremore, OK, Monte Clark (Tina), Steven Kubly (Joyce), all of Monroe, and Debra Stacy (Ken) of Ludlow, MA; 6 grandchildren; 6 step-grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; a brother, John Schmid (Sharon) of Monroe; a step-sister, Audrey Patterson (Leon) of Appleton, WI; and many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Merlyn Schmid; his mother, Gertrude Schmid Anderson; his step-father, Dewey Anderson; and a step-brother, Cal Anderson.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, August 25, 2010, at 11:00 a.m., at the NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME, Monroe. Reverend Randy Booth of the Monroe United Methodist Church will officiate with burial to follow in Highland Cemetery, Monticello. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Tuesday from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. A memorial fund will be established in Eugene's name.
