Bryson receives Outstanding Educator Award

MONROE - Valarie Bryson, a math instructor at Monroe Middle School, was presented with the Outstanding Educator Award at the recent district Scholarship and Awards program.

The program is sponsored by the Monroe Excellence in Education Foundation and includes a $500 stipend to be used for professional development or classroom teaching materials.

The Foundation presents the award annually in an effort to recognize outstanding achievements and performance of teachers in the Monroe School District. The award is presented to an individual teacher or team of teachers in the Monroe School District that exemplifies the highest standards and practices of the teaching profession.

Bryson has taught at the middle school for six years. She was nominated by her district colleagues, who mentioned her passion for helping students learn, her effectiveness in teaching, knowledge and her willingness to develop and carry out new initiatives both in her classroom and the district, as reasons why she should receive the award.

The Monroe Excellence in Education Foundation also gave out about $11,000 in grants on Monday, May 13. Other grant winners included:

• The Monroe Middle School, which received $250 for the PBIS red card store and $300 for the seventh grade exploratory German program.

• The Monroe High School, which received $2,808 for a three-dimensional printer, $1,000 for the Movable program and $2,000 for the Read to Succeed program.

• Parkside Elementary School, which received $270 for the Watch Minder program for behavior management.

• Abraham Lincoln Accelerated Learning Academy, which received $500 for the Abe's Appy Kids program.

• Northside Elementary School, which received $668 for the Second Step: Skills program for social and academic success and $500 for mentor texts for writing and reading workshop models.

The Monroe Excellence in Education Foundation is an independent community organization that provides private resources to enhance educational programs in the School District of Monroe.
