MONROE — A local pilot will be bringing his championship-seeking cohort to town next week. Gabe Witt, a 2019 MHS grad, will do a meet-and-greet with his Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Golden Eagles Flight Team at the Monroe Municipal Airport May 14.
The open house event will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Golden Eagles Fight Team, from Prescott, Ariz., are competing May 8-13 in Oshkosh for the National Intercollegiate Flying Association’s Safety and Flight Evaluation Conference National Championship (NIFA SAFECON). The Golden Eagles have won 14 straight national titles.
Gabe Witt is the son of John the Heidi Witt, and is the captain of the Golden Eagles Flight Team. He will be graduating from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University on May 6 with a degree in Aerospace Engineering with a concentration in Astronautics and a minor in Flight. Gabe is a Multi-Engine Rated Commercial Pilot with an Instrument Rating.
The Golden Eagles Flight Team has an extensive legacy. When entering campus, there is a series of 14 prominent signs, one for every year the Golden Eagles Flight Team has won the NIFA SAFECON (National Intercollegiate Flying Association’s Safety and Flight Evaluation Conference) National Championship. Rich in history, the Golden Eagles Flight Team is consistently one of the top collegiate flight teams in the nation. In 2017, the team was inducted into the International Air & Space Hall of Fame at the San Diego Air and Space Museum alongside legends such as Chuck Yeager, Buzz Aldrin, Neil Armstrong, Sally Ride, and The Wright Brothers.
