MONROE - Bryce Grossen recently participated in the 28th annual "Poultry Surprise" Youth Essay Contest held on Sept. 27 and 28 in Portage. The event was conducted by the Wisconsin International Poultry Club.

Prior to attending the festival, in an attempt to promote the breeding and exhibition of purebred poultry among Wisconsin's youth, interested youth could apply for the "Pullet Surprise." Each applicant submitted an essay, poem or other creative writing document for review by a committee appointed by the Wisconsin International Poultry Club.

Grossen's poem, titled "The World With No Chickens," won first place for the Junior Division. As part of the competition and to receive his awards, Grossen had to read his poem in front of approximately 70 people in attendance. Grossen's winnings included an incubator, a homemade wood carrying box, a wire chicken cage, a bag of chicken feed, a "Standard of Perfection" poultry book, a one-year membership to Wisconsin Junior Poultry Association and a pair of Leghorn Bantam Chickens, donated by David Laatsch, Beaver Dam.

Grossen also participated in the live Poultry Showing Contest and won first place in Showmanship. Grossen is a member of the Cheese Country Clovers 4-H Club and is the son of Brad and Kari Grossen, Monroe.
