MONROE — The newest baby of 2020 at Monroe Clinic may have been the last to arrive at the hospital among others already there in labor the early morning hours of Jan. 1.
However, baby girl Alaina Lynn Wild-Roth came swiftly, making her way into the world before the others, earning the title of the first New Year’s baby of 2020.
Her mother, Jennifer Wild, said labor with Alaina was much quicker than with her big brother, Xavier, now 1 and a half.
Her water broke around 1:30 a.m. and then contractions started. Alaina was born at 6:38 a.m. Jan. 1. She weighed 7 pounds, 10 ounces and was 19 and a quarter inches long. Alaina shares a middle name, Lynn, with both of her grandmothers.
She came earlier than her Jan. 9 due date, but that wasn’t a complete surprise to Jennifer, who said her son also came early. She and her fiancé, Zach Roth, were surprised to learn she was the first baby of the New Year, Jennifer said, since they were told a few others were in labor before they came in.
“We were the last ones to get there but the first ones to have the baby,” Jennifer said. Monroe Clinic gave them a gift to commemorate the occasion, which will add to the unforgettable moment of their daughter’s arrival. Longtime Monroe Clinic doctor John Bazley delivered Aliana and all went well.
The family was home just a little more than a day later in a neutral outfit since the couple never learned the gender. They were settling into the Monroe family dairy farm after a surprisingly restful first night. Alaina only woke for food and diaper changes, Jennifer said.
Xavier wasn’t sure what to think about the family’s new addition.
“He was very concerned,” Jennifer said of Xavier’s reaction to his new sister. “He didn’t think she was real at first.”
Jennifer said she had a pregnancy with no sickness and felt good the majority of the time. She was a little surprised it was a girl, since she had heard that morning sickness is more prominent with those who have baby girls.
There isn’t a doubt Aliana will likely grow up on the farm and enjoy the equipment and animals as much as her brother does, Jennifer said.
Alaina’s grandparents are Don and Judy Wild, Monroe; Lori Francis, Brodhead; and Brian and Heidi Roth, Beloit.
