MONROE — The tenth-ranked Monroe Cheesemakers went 2-3 over the past week, with a dual sweep over RVC rival Whitewater, followed up by a 1-3 record against a deep Division 1 field at the Sun Prairie Invitational.
Monroe swept the Whitewater Whippets, 7-0 in boys tennis on Thursday, May 7.
In the opening match of the Sun Prairie Invitational, which was held Friday and Saturday, May 8-9, the Cheesemakers defeated Nicolet 6-1. Monroe then lost 5-2 to Verona, 6-1 to Whitefish Bay, and 5-2 to Sun Prairie United.
“I was really happy with the results we saw. Carsen (Bartholf) and Hamilton (Stites) picked up a big win at #1 doubles (against Nicolet and Verona) which should really help their resume later on. I also moved the Gerrits brothers to doubles to load up our doubles lineup and they picked up a win as well,” said Cheesemaker coach Matt Bordner.
Whitefish Bay is the top-ranked team in the state in Division 1, and Bordner tinkered with the lineup with eyes on the upcoming postseason.
“We played against the #1 team in the state for Division 1, Whitefish Bay, (and) I slid Travis (Saunders) and Graysan (Bartholf) up to #1 doubles to give them a chance to boost their doubles resume, and they came up clutch with a huge win,” Bordner said, with the duo victoriously winning in three sets 3-6, 7-6(5), 10-5.
Against Sun Prairie, Bordner said he was really proud of the team’s effort and happy with “the Gerrits brothers both picking up some big wins.”
Monroe (10-6, 4-1 Rock Valley) was scheduled to take on Big Foot on Tuesday, May 12, then Watertown Luther Prep on Thursday, May 14.
