Nearly 60 community members gathered at the Monroe Public Library on the evening of July 2 for a special America 250 celebration sponsored by the Colonel Benjamin Harrison Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR), and the Wisconsin Society DAR (WSDAR).
The program featured two engaging presentations that brought the Revolutionary era to life and highlighted the courage, sacrifice, and determination of those who helped secure America’s independence.
Local historian Tom Mitchell opened the evening with a detailed presentation on William Whipple, one of the lesser-known signers of the Declaration of Independence. Mitchell explored Whipple’s contributions to the Revolutionary cause and shared the compelling story of his enslaved servant, who served alongside him during the American Revolution before eventually gaining his freedom. The presentation shed light on both the complexities and the sacrifices of the era, offering attendees a deeper understanding of a patriot often overlooked in traditional accounts of the nation’s founding.
The second presentation featured renowned actress JaNelle Powers, who captivated the audience with a moving dramatization of Abigail Adams. Through her portrayal, Powers brought to life the experiences of Adams as a devoted wife, mother, and influential advisor during the nation’s formative years. Her performance highlighted Abigail Adams’ intelligence, resilience, and diplomatic influence, reminding attendees of the vital role women played in shaping the course of American history.
Together, the presentations provided powerful reminders of the personal sacrifices and unwavering commitment demonstrated by the men and women who helped establish the United States.
In addition to the program, the Wisconsin State DAR provided an informative poster display supporting the America 250 theme, while members of the Colonel Benjamin Harrison Chapter served refreshments before and after the presentations.
The event was well received by all who attended and served as a fitting tribute to the upcoming 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States, encouraging participants to reflect on the enduring legacy of the nation’s struggle for independence.
