NEW GLARUS - Green County American Legion announced its oratorical contest winners after Green County high school students competed in the American Legion's Constitutional Speech contest on Sunday, Jan. 15 at the New Glarus High/Middle School.
Zachary R. Clark, a senior at New Glarus High School, was this year's winner. His winning oration was titled "Understanding the Constitution." Clark received a $100 scholarship award from the Green County Council of the American Legion and a $50 scholarship award from the New Glarus Stuessy-Kuenzi Post 141 of the American Legion and will go on to compete at the Third District Oratorical Contest to be held Saturday, Jan. in Monroe.
The Third District winner will compete in the regional/state competition at Ripon College on Saturday, Feb. 25.
Zachary Van Natta, a senior at Monroe High School, was the runner-up in the Green County Contest. Van Natta's prepared oration was titled "Treason, It's relevance to the Constitution and importance." If Clark is unable to compete in the district contest, Van Natta will represent Green County.
Contestants were required to give an 8- to 10-minute prepared oration on a topic of their choice related to the United States Constitution. They were also assigned a topic on which to give a 3- to 5-minute oration. The assigned topic was one of four topics that related to specific articles of the Constitution.
