JANESVILLE - Charlie Baumann, Monroe, was the recipient of a 2012 Spirit of Philanthropy Award given by the Community Foundation of Southern Wisconsin.

Baumann was recognized at the Foundation's annual meeting on Oct. 17 for his leadership of the Monroe Excellence in Education Fund, the largest of 11 Excellence in Education funds served by the Community Foundation.

Baumann is the former chair of the Monroe EIE Fund and is serving his second three-year term as an advisory board member. For the past three years, he has chaired the annual "Steak "n Shake" fundraiser earning more than $40,000 for the EIE Fund.

"Charlie's organizational and business skills make this the easiest fundraising event to put together in our area," said Linda Gebhardt, donor services representative for the Community Foundation.

In 2011-2012 the Monroe EIE Fund awarded more than $13,000 in grant support for innovative programs within the Monroe School District. A significant portion of the grant dollars supported iPads at Monroe Middle School. As of this fall, all the sixth graders in the Monroe School District have access to an iPad due in large part to the efforts of the Monroe EIE.

Baumann has served the community as president of Green County Big Brothers/Big Sisters, the Green County Family YMCA, and Monroe Area Rebel Soccer. He currently serves on the boards of the Mike Muranyi Junior Golf Foundation and the R. Kubly Family Foundation. Baumann, a former executive with Colony Brands, now teaches math and science at Monroe Middle School.
