Founded in 1936, Canyon Camp is celebrating its 90th anniversary this summer as nearly 1,000 young people and adult leaders experience the outdoors, build lifelong skills, and “Witness History” during America’s 250th celebration.
Located in the beautiful Driftless Area of northwest Illinois, Canyon Camp has served generations of Scouts, families, students, and community members. Originally made possible through a gift from the Koenig family of Freeport, the camp continues to stand as one of the region’s most treasured outdoor assets. Today, Canyon Camp is operated by the Blackhawk Area Council, Scouting America, with significant ongoing conservation efforts and capital investments ensuring the property remains strong for future generations.
This summer, Canyon Camp will welcome Scouts and leaders through Scouts BSA, Cub Scouts, high school outings, college programs, and other outdoor experiences. Scouts are traveling from across the Midwest, from small towns throughout northwest Illinois and southern Wisconsin to larger communities across the region. Just this week, young people and leaders have come from Pecatonica, Rochelle, Lena, Washington, Monroe, Rockford, Machesney Park, McHenry, and beyond.
For 90 years, Canyon Camp has offered young people the chance to canoe, hike, swim, camp, learn outdoor skills, build friendships, and grow as leaders. The camp’s in-ground pool, made possible years ago by community members and leaders from the Newell Group, remains a popular gathering place. The nearly 80-year-old rain-or-shine pavilion, now a fully functioning dining hall, serves thousands of meals each summer and recently received a new metal roof thanks to anonymous benefactors.
In recent years, the Friends of Canyon Camp have generated nearly $500,000 in support for the property. These efforts have helped bring online a new restroom facility, improve program areas for young people, and make significant capital improvements across camp.
“At the heart of all Canyon Camp does are the young people we serve,” said Seth Kannarr. “More than ever, young people need the great outdoors. They need places where they can learn Scout skills, build confidence, understand what it means to ‘Be Prepared,’ and grow into good citizens who do their best.”
As the United States prepares to celebrate its 250th anniversary, Scouting continues to offer timeless opportunities for young people to learn, lead, serve, and grow. Serving boys and girls ages 5–17, Scouting provides a place for everyone to experience adventure, character development, citizenship, and leadership.
“Canyon Camp is a special place,” said Dan Dick, Friends of Canyon Camp President. “For 90 years, it has helped shape young people through outdoor adventure, service, and community. As we celebrate America’s 250th, we are proud that young people continue to witness history while also preparing to make history of their own.”
Canyon Camp’s 90th anniversary is not only a celebration of its past, but also a recommitment to its future. Through the leadership of the Blackhawk Area Council, the dedication of volunteers, and the generosity of donors and community members, Canyon Camp will continue serving young people for generations to come.
