CAMBRIDGE — An RBI-single from Benny Blanchar in the bottom of the eighth pushed Cambridge over New Glarus 3-2 on Tuesday, May 9. The loss puts the Knights a game behind the Bluejays in the Capitol Conference standings with just two games left.
New Glarus tied the game at two in the top of the seventh as Jake Roth and Leyton Mihlbauer reached base. Ashlin Mihlbauer then moved them into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt, and Leyton Mihlbauer scored on a fielder’s choice.
Cambridge had the winning run in scoring position in the bottom half of the frame, but Leyton Mihlbauer escaped the jam with a strikeout and pop out. He recorded just one out in the eighth, though, as the Bluejays hit three singles for the win.
Leyton Mihlbauer, Ashlin Mihlbauer and Matt Roth tallied two hits each, while the final hit came from Jake Roth. Patrick Alt started the game and gave up one earned run on five hits. He struck out nine without issuing a walk. Leyton Mihlbauer suffered the loss.
If Cambridge defeats New Glarus in their second matchup, it all but secures the team a conference championship. The Bluejays would need to take just one game from Marshall for an outright title. There could still be a three-way tie for the title, however. Cambridge (6-1 Capitol South) would need to defeat New Glarus (5-2) and lose both to Marshall (5-2), who would have to win out. Additionally, New Glarus would need to sweep Waterloo (1-6).
