WAUNAKEE - The Monroe baseball team committed six errors and ran into a hot pitcher in Waunakee's Ben Nordloh as the Cheesemakers lost a Badger Challenge game to the Warriors 7-0 on Saturday.

"It was a tough day to play with the wind," Monroe coach Dustin Huffman said. "There was some residual effect from the night before (Monroe's 19-1 five-inning loss to Fort Atkinson).

Nordloh pitched a three-hit shutout and struck out 11. With the loss, Monroe drops to 10-10, 5-4 Badger South.

"He (Nordloh) controlled the game and constantly was throwing on the inside half," Huffman said.

Waunakee had a three-run second inning to take a 4-0 lead.

"They (Waunakee) had four runs before they got their first hit," Huffman said. "It was a combination of the errors, walks and hit batters."

Monroe junior Brad Ripp pitched 61⁄3 innings and gave up seven runs, but just two earned runs on seven hits. Ripp struck out one, walked three and hit three.

The three hits for the Cheesemakers came on junior Carter Sawdey's single leading off the first, senior Garrett Gogin's one-out double in the fourth and junior Isaac Allen's two-out double in the seventh.

It marked the Cheesemakers second game in a string of four games in five days. Monroe plays at Mount Horeb at 4 p.m. today and then hosts Monona Grove on Tuesday.

"The guys love to compete," Huffman said. "It's good to have a day of rest and a day to recuperate. The best thing for a slump is to go out there and play again. We want to make strides to get better and right the ship with the playoffs coming. I'm confident our guys can do that."
