WALWORTH - The Monroe tennis team advanced No. 1 singles player David Shon and the No. 1 doubles team of Mark Jenson and Kevin Noriega on Tuesday to the sectional at East Troy, which will take place today.
Fifth-seeded Shon pulled off the upset in Walworth over Jefferson's fourth-seeded Danny Arndorfer. Earlier in the year, it was Arndorfer who bested Shon in two straight sets. But when it mattered the most, it was Shon who broke through in a tough match to advance to the next round. After taking the first set 6-3, Shon lost the second set to Arndorfer 4-6. While both players looked tired, it was Shon who outlasted Arndorfer, winning the third and final set 7-5.
"I couldn't be happier with the guys today," Monroe coach Brad Saugstad said. "We pulled some upsets and avenged a few loses from earlier this year. We left a few matches on the court, (but) we gave ourselves a chance, and overall, it was a good day for us."
In their doubles match against the fifth-seeded duo of D'Jaelen Evans and Will Huerth of Big Foot, the Cheesemakers tandem of Jenson and Noriega had to battle back in order to survive and advance. After forcing a tiebreaker, Jenson and Noriega dropped the first set 6-7. Jenson and Noriega responded with a 6-1 second set, but again went to a tiebreaker in the final set. With their playoff hopes on the line, the Monroe duo survived and won the last set 7-6.
"It was an amazing match to watch," Saugstad said. "Neither team shrunk from the challenge, and Mark and Kevin really earned the win."
